Sketching Your Story: Three-Panel Comic Exercise: In this class, we’ll use simple drawing techniques to tell a story in three-panel comic form. We cover the basics of building a simple character, practicing expressions, working through backgrounds, and creating a short three-panel story.
This is a stand-alone class but pairs with the principles in my class Feeling Stuck? Doodle your way out!
These exercises are meant to guide you through making a simple three-panel comic and do not require a finished or precise drawing style. We use modifications of the techniques in Ivan Brunetti’s Cartooning Philosophy and Practice. For more examples of simplified comic styles, you can check out webcomics like Cyanide and Happiness, Sarah Scribbles, Julia Wertz, or XKCD.
Keep it light, and don’t forget to have fun. Take this as your chance to make something simple without being attached to a perfect finished product. The simpler, the better!
