APU Software APU Loudness Compressor v2.1.3 - TCD (Win): The APU Loudness Compressor is a versatile compressor/expander designed to accommodate modern loudness standards such as LUFS and True Peak. Departing from traditional RMS or Peak measurements, the gain envelope is now determined by LUFS measurements, providing transparent compression ideal for mastering and post-production workflows. For those who prefer a more traditional approach, the compressor also supports RMS and Peak units of measurement.
Operational Flexibility: The compressor operates with a "source range" and "target range" in place of traditional threshold + ratio controls. Alternatively, users can enable the traditional threshold + ratio controls via a drop-down menu in the dynamics section. The compressor offers various modes of operation, including expander, limiter, and more.
Learn Mode: Enabling "learn" mode allows the compressor to automatically adjust the source or target range to match the source material. This feature serves as a convenient starting point for further fine-tuning.
Loudness Flavors: The compressor supports a variety of loudness types, allowing users to configure the detection circuitry to use LUFS or traditional measurement units (RMS, Peak). Channels can be split or linked, which is especially beneficial for multi-channel audio formats like Dolby Atmos.
- Momentary: Short-duration LUFS measurement (400ms) for moment-by-moment dynamics processing. Responsive and transparent, with applied K-weighting and channel weighting for perceptual accuracy.
- Short-Term: Longer duration LUFS measurement (3 seconds) for large-scale dynamics processing. Less responsive than momentary but useful for adjusting the broader dynamics picture. K-weighting and channel weighting are applied.
- RMS: Traditional loudness measurement using a rolling time interval of 300ms. A first-order approximation of perceived loudness, with a more traditional character as it doesn't apply K-weighting or channel weighting.
- True Peak: Similar to traditional peak measurements but more accurate, considering inter-sample peaks. Extremely responsive, suitable for very fast attack and release times.
- Peak: Standard peak circuit operating on a time interval equal to the configured block size (1 ms by default). Slightly more responsive than True Peak but less accurate, as it doesn't consider inter-sample peaks.
