How to Create a Seamless Raster Pattern: Greetings, I'm Geetanjali, an artist, illustrator, and surface pattern designer based in the vibrant locale of Goa, India.
Welcome to my Skillshare class! This marks the inception of the Creative Workflows series, focusing on adopting a creative approach to patterns. I'm thrilled to share my Workflow with all of you and explore the intricacies of pattern creation.
In this inaugural class, I'll unveil one of my favorite workflows for crafting seamless repeat patterns, utilizing two powerhouse programs: Procreate and Adobe Illustrator. Procreate is a game-changer for artists with its user-friendly interface and intuitive drawing gestures.
However, it has limitations when designing seamless repeat patterns beyond the full-drop and half-drop options.
On the other hand, Adobe Illustrator offers the Pattern Option Tool, a feature allowing pattern design with over six different repeats and real-time previews. We'll blend the strengths of these programs to create a raster pattern in Adobe Illustrator, deviating from the typical vector-based approach.
As Pablo Picasso wisely said, "Learn the Rules like a Pro so you can break them like an Artist." I'll guide you through an unconventional use of the Pattern Option Tool in Adobe Illustrator to craft a Tossed Pattern using our Procreate motifs in raster format.
What You'll Learn:
- Setting up the Canvas in Procreate
- Sketching out Motifs
- Exporting Motifs to a Computer and Preparing them for the Next Step
- Creating the Pattern in Illustrator using the Pattern Option Tool
- Adjusting the Final Tile size and Swatch size
- Saving, Exporting, and Testing the Pattern in Illustrator
- Saving the Pattern Swatch and Tile as a Layered .psd File
- Things to Consider While Using this Workflow
This class is tailored for intermediate and advanced skill levels. Prior knowledge of Procreate and Adobe Illustrator basics is essential.
By the class's conclusion, you'll gain a fresh perspective on the Pattern Option Tool features and enhance your efficiency in designing patterns in Procreate.
