
The ABC of Packaging Design: Packaging Design for Print: You've finished the latest design for your packaging; however, you're not sure how to properly prepare it for printing or make your packaging designs ready to print, but aren't sure whether you've skipped a step and you're not sure about it, or you're confident about your design, but you're always wondering what you can do to give an extra dimension to your packaging by using specific finishing techniques, printing techniques, and materials. If we haven't met, I'm Beatrice Menis; I'm a Branding & Packaging Designer, multi-hyphenate business owner, and educator with over 15 years of experience in the field.

What will we be covering for this lesson?
1. Colour Setup:
The class will begin by exploring the two most commonly used colors: CMYK and RGB. We'll discuss when it is most appropriate to use them and the formats they can support.
2. Printing Techniques:
We'll review the three most popular printing techniques that apply to packaging:
- Offset Printing
- Digital Printing
- Flexo Printing
In this article, we'll review the pros and cons of each method and determine what they are best used for.
3. File & Workspace Setup:
The next step is to prepare our file to ensure we use the right setting and color mode. Finally, we'll create a customized workspace to create artwork, which will come in handy whenever you need to prepare any new artwork for printing!
4. Layers & Die-Cut Setup:
In this article, we will walk through the basics of layering, which can be an excellent base for designing new packaging for printing.
Once the layers have been set up, we will learn about spot colors and how to correctly set up a die-cut/cutter/decline and its measurements.
5. Special Finishes:
In this class, we will explore special finishes. We will discover how to make an opacity color for a holographic effect and adequately arrange all the elements with a specific finish.
6. Artwork Legend:
We will review helpful legends/notes you can highlight in every artwork aspect, like the date, the project's name, the colors used inside the image, visual references, and more. This is extremely helpful not just for keeping records but also for communicating your ideas to the vendor!
7. Exporting for Print:
Then we'll export our file for printing! We'll walk through the steps to export our files as an outline PDF as well as an Illustrator outline
settings.
