Animating Textures on 3D Game Characters in Godot: If you like the vintage 3D look of games that animate the texture on a character's face and you want to master this yourself but require assistance to get up and running, then this class is for you!
This course introduces the application of hand-drawn faces to 3D low poly characters to give the retro game console experience.
Utilizing all the free software available, including, for example, the Godot 3-D engine and the Krita painting application, I'll show you how I use the texture atlas to give life and emotion to the game characters.
I've always been awed by this kind of art; however, when I wanted to incorporate it into myself, it wasn't easy to find any tutorials to help me, which meant I needed to find it myself. I decided that in the future, I'd create the tutorials I'd like to have existed when I first started learning.
In this course, you will learn the following:
- The fundamentals of creating an atlas of textures
- How can you use the texture atlas to create animation frames
- How do I set texture offsets using keyframes within Godot's AnimationPlayer
- You'll accomplish this by drawing various facial expressions and then placing them in the form of a grid, creating an atlas of texture and then learning how the grid maps out to UV coordinates, and then importing the drawing into Godot, making it a face material, and animating its UV offset to show the various frames.
- Near the close of the class, after you've applied this technique through this Godot project I've prepared for you, I'll walk you through the technical details you know about using this technique in your projects.
- The ability to change facial expressions is only one of the applications of this technique!
UV offset animation can also create waterfalls, rivers, fire, smoke fog, and melting effects. Any other situation where the texture move or snap into different positions is a significant effect!
This class is appropriate for all levels because everything is included for you, including the sample texture atlas that I designed!
I'm guessing you'll want to draw your drawings, but even if that's not your case, I can still be educated on the basics of UV offset animation using my drawings.
For beginners, they can make use of the near-complete project that I have provided, as well as the step-by-step directions I offer to complete the project, while more skilled Godot users might find it a great new way to incorporate it into their existing repertoire and then be able to jump from this course straight into exploring and developing the concept in their work.
If you want to go deeper, I am working on a class exploring UV offset facial animations in Godot more in-depth.
To finish this class, you'll require the following:
- A computer capable of running Godot 4: anything made during the last decade will likely work with Windows, Mac, or Linux.
- Godot 4
- Drawing software that has layers, like Krita
