Students will be taught how to shade with a pencil. Students will design an object with a value scale and shade an object using a chiaroscuro pencil. Students will be taught how to shade with colored pencils. Students will create the value range and then shade the object according to the various value patterns: high key value, low key value, Middle key value, Tenebrism, high contrast, and chiaroscuro. Students will learn to sketch compositional thumbnails. Students will be taught to draw using charcoal pencils in black and white and black-white, black, and gray chalk pastel. Students will choose three items they have at home to draw: one black object, one grey object, and a white object. Students will select their favorite thumbnail sketch and draw the objects on black paper using charcoal pencils. Students will use white and gray chalk pastels to shade the medium and light values and then leave the black paper for a dark color. Students will create three-object still lives with gray or white paper. Students will outline the objects with charcoal or pencil. Students will draw dark and light values and then leave the gray paper for their median values. Students will also complete an abstract still-life on white paper using white, black, and gray colored pencils - shading dark areas and keeping the white paper as the light.
