Scan Overlays

Digital effects can reproduce many types of distortion and texture, but they do not always have the irregular character of something captured from a real physical source. Scan Overlays approaches this differently by providing more than 50 real scan overlays that can be placed directly into video projects.

The collection is designed primarily for two jobs: building textured transitions and creating visual backgrounds. All included scans are provided in 4K resolution using the H.264 format.

Turning Scans into Transitions

The basic process is intentionally straightforward:

Choose a scan → Add it to the edit → Blend it with the footage → Use it as a transition or background

This drag-and-drop approach also leaves room for experimentation. Different scans can produce very different results depending on how they are combined with the underlying video.

The creator specifically recommends trying the Difference blending mode when experimenting with scans or backgrounds. This can produce more distinctive interactions between the scan texture and the footage underneath it.

Building Visual Backgrounds

Scan Overlays is not limited to transitions. The same assets can also serve as visual backgrounds.

Instead of treating a scan as a short element between two clips, you can incorporate its texture into a larger composition. This provides another way to give footage a less conventional appearance while keeping the scanned material visible as part of the design.

According to the creator, this approach made it possible to build textured transitions without needing to learn Adobe After Effects specifically for the effect. Instead, the focus can remain on combining the scans with footage, testing blending options, and finding a result that works for the edit.
