About the instrument:
The ney, a wind instrument made of reed, boasts a long body with 6 or 7 holes that can be covered to produce various sounds, reminiscent of a flute. Known for its deep, otherworldly, and impressive tones, the ney symbolizes the 'absolute' and has historical roots dating back to Sumerian society. The term 'ney' finds its origins in history and was first used by Mevlâna J. Rûmî, the first known neyzen. In 18th-century Istanbul, Mevlevi dervishes played a significant role in teaching the ney, passing down their knowledge through lineages over the centuries.
